Beef...Get Them Growing From Day 1
Feed Them Right...from the Start!
The first 21 to 28 days in the feedlot are the most critical for beef cattle,
and the younger they are the more important it is. The main problems affecting
them on arrival are:
Stress
Disease
Nutritional deficiencies
Restricted feed and water while in transit
Change of feed...and not knowing the last feeding program
One of the main goals is the development and care of the rumen.
Not knowing the previous feeding program means that we cannot assume that
the rumen is already working properly. To maximize performance we must make
sure that the microbes in the rumen are there and working in sufficient
numbers. This is the reason why we don't give these cattle silage or urea
in their starter diet. The bugs must be there to use up the soluble protein.
A good starter ration must contain a source of protein for immediate growth
and gains. High levels of Bypass Protein will be quickly digested
without rumen action. A full range of minerals and vitamins must be supplied,
particulary Vitamin A, the B-Complex vitamins and Electrolites
to relieve stress and help the immune system fight any disease.
Salt / Water and Small Grains
Don't underestimate the value of the "cheap stuff". Plenty of
fresh, clean water and free-choice, loose salt must be available. Just like
a horse and cart. Without the horse you don't move. Without the cart the
load is left behind.
Small grains such as barley and oats are ideal for starting
cattle in the feedlot. The introduction of grain to the diet stimulates
the development of the rumen. Its function changes dramatically and requires
careful balancing if the cattle are not be thrown off feed at this early
stage.

Silage Transition Suppliment
After 21 to 28 days on a Feedlot Starter ration, Silage
can be introduced into the ration over the next 2-3 weeks with the
use of this specially formulated supplement. It will balance out the increasing
intake of silage soluble protein and maintain rumen health. When maximum
silage intake is achieved FEEDMATCH will formulate a custom suppliment based
on your analyzed feeds.
